CEOS EO HANDBOOK – MISSION SUMMARY - EPS-Aeolus -
Full Name EUMETSAT Polar System - Aeolus
aka Aeolus-2
Status Considered
Mission Agencies EUMETSAT, ESA Launch Date 2034
Mission Links EOL Date 2044
EO Portal Info NORAD Catalog #
International Designator
Orbit Type Sun-synchronous Orbit Period 92.3 minutes
Orbit Sense Ascending Orbit Inclination
Orbit Altitude 395 km Orbit Longitude
Orbit LST 18:00 Repeat Cycle 28 days
Objectives and Applications Aeolus-2 will provide global wind profile measurements for Numerical Weather Prediction using backscattered UV laser light to measure Doppler shifts. It will also provide atmospheric aerosol profiles. In addition, Radio Occultation profiles will be obtained to determine atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles using Galileo, GPS and Beidou. LST is 18:00 (on an Ascending Node) ad at 06:00 (for a dawn-dusk orbit)
