TAMAMUSHI Mission

Objectives and Applications

TAMAMUSHI is a 100–200 kg-class Earth observation satellite being developed under Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) SBIR Phase 3 program. Its mission is to demonstrate compact, cost-effective hyperspectral imaging from a small-satellite platform and validate the end-to-end use of the resulting data. Covering the visible to shortwave-infrared spectrum, complemented by panchromatic imaging, the satellite will support applications including agriculture and forestry monitoring, mineral mapping, greenhouse-gas and environmental assessment, oil-field and pipeline monitoring, and detection of illegal activities. The mission will also build operational expertise and assess commercial viability toward a future high-revisit hyperspectral satellite constellation.
