Full Name Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers Status Operational (extended)
Mission Agencies NASA Launch Date 28 Jun 2006
Mission Links EOL Date Mar 2026
EO Portal Info NORAD Catalog #
International Designator
Orbit Type Highly elliptical Orbit Period
Orbit Sense Orbit Inclination 63.4 deg
Orbit Altitude Orbit Longitude
Orbit LST Repeat Cycle
Objectives and Applications The overall mission objective is to demonstrate a new capability of stereoscopic imaging of the magnetosphere by establishing global connectivities and causal relationships between processes in different regions of the magnetosphere. By imaging the charge exchange neutral atoms over a broad energy range (about 1-100 keV) using two identical instruments on two widely spaced high-altitude and high-inclination spacecraft, TWINS will enable the 3-three-dimensional visualization and the resolution of large scale structures and dynamics within the magnetosphere for the first time.
